Hello,
It seems there is a problem between thunderbird 3.1 and perdition even
the last one.
Here's some part of the log of a a freshly installed Squeeze with the
last version of perdition (same problem with 1.18 or with our prod
server using Lenny and 1.17).

Jul 9 14:17:26 sorbier perdition.pop3s[2006]: Fatal error establishing
SSL connection to client
After the first connection nothing works, on perdition side the message
is always the same "Fatal error establishing SSL connection to client".
Thunderbird 3.1 is implementing a solution to security issue
CVE-2009-3555 as explained in this document
https://wiki.mozilla.org/Security:Renegotiation
I tried different parameters but nothing worked.
I wonder if there are some perdition parameters that may correct the
problem ?
