The other proxy is : SUN proxy IMAP
What is the

map proxy for use with webmailers that has a very different function from
perdition?

I've used imapproxy (http://www.imapproxy.org) in the past. It holds
connections open for a specified time after a request so that should a
user issue another request within say, 60 seconds, the webmail system
won't need to re-open the mailbox.
