[ULTRAMONKEY-USERS] What persistent exactly mean?

Hi all, 
       I have a set up a load balancing cluster to load balance proxy using the ultra monkey on RHEL4. Now I want to direct all the connections from the user in a single session to the same proxy. Thus I wanted to use the directive "persistent". But in man pages it has nothing much about this directive. But as I leant it seems like session will be timed out after the number of seconds mentioned against the persistent directive irrespective of whether user is idle or not. Is this correct? Please be kind enough to enlighten me on this. Thanks in advance.
